New YMCA Classes and Our Daytime "Guest"

Almost three weeks ago the kids started new classes at the Y.  I thought about signing them up for Kindersports again, since we all had a really good time in it.  But Tom and I also wanted to get them into some classes where they were on their own so they could interact with other kids and learn from other adults.  So Morgan is in a class that meets for an hour on Monday's - it is called "First Friends".  It is a class of all two-year-olds and the participate in activities involving music, creative art and free play.  They are reading the book The Jolly Postman over the session and then tying in other stories to this one through the course.  So far, she has  learned about Goldie Locks & the 3 Bears, the Gingerbread Man, and now Jack & the Beanstalk.  It is all pretty cute from what the teachers have told me and she seems delighted with all she has done when I pick her up each week.  Now Jackson's class meets on Tuesday's for an hour and it is called "Boys R Us 2".  It is a class of boys ages 3 to 5.  And he is loving it too!  His class is similar to Morgan's in the activities, but just has different themes each week that are purely BOY.  So far they have had a "Ball" theme where they talked about things that roll and they created a Monster Game where they try to roll a ball into the monster's mouth.  Then last week they learned about Pirates and buried treasures.  They painted umbrellas with a treasure map on it. This way they can look for treasures while playing outside in the rain.  Really cute!  Tomorrow the theme is supposed to be "Silly Days", so I have no idea what to expect there.

Besides heading to these classes at the Y, we have also signed them up for their first swimming lessons!  We have two little fish!  Morgan is a Perch in a Parent/Child class - it is a half hour long on Saturday mornings.  Jackson is a Pike in the preschool lessons (so he is on his own).  It meets on Thursday evenings for a half hour.  Jackson's class is great because there are only three other kids in the class with him - so he gets more attention.  They have worked on "ice cream scoops" and reaching out your arms in the swimming motion, blowing bubbles with their noses and mouths, and floating.  He doesn't quite want to put his head all the way in yet, but overall he is pretty fearless and is listening well to Miss Claire (his teacher).  Morgan's class, on the other hand, seems huge.  I think there are 12 parent/child teams.  I guess they do more kids in that class since the parent is there too, but it is a little hard to hear all the instructions from the teacher.  She is doing amazing though - she loves all the games they play and loves kicking her legs to get from one side of the pool to the other.  She is also doing really good floating and blowing bubbles.

And this isn't an exciting video, but thought I would share a glimpse of Jackson's swimming lesson.

All of these classes will go for eight weeks.  It should keep us busy until spring is in full swing, since we are at the Y at least four days a week now!

So you may also be wondering who our guest was from the title above.  All last week, Tom was home with us, but he wasn't a very fun guest.  A week ago Saturday, he came down with a really bad cold/cough.  It just wasn't getting better come Monday, but he still went into work only to come home early.  It really was wiping him out each day.  Finally Wednesday he had had enough and I called our doctor to see if he could get an appointment.  Unfortunately our doctor was booked until 4 PM and they suggested he go to the Urgent Care.  So there he headed, met with a rude doctor, and was diagnosed with the flu and bronchitis.  The doctor said there was nothing to do for the flu since it was more than 48 hours from the time he got sick.  But he did give him antibiotics for the bronchitis.  He wasn't going to give him anything for the cough but Tom pleaded with him.  Tom couldn't get out more than a word at a time without coughing in between them.  So finally the doctor gave in and gave him a prescription for a high octane cough syrup.  The combination of the cough meds and the antibiotics just wiped him out - the rest of the week, he slept from about 10 AM to 4 PM.  He was finally a lot better come Saturday, but he still has a bit of a cough.  Tom likes to boast that he never gets sick (which is somewhat true), but when he does, he is miserable to have around.  I felt bad for him, I really did.  But I'm glad he is better - for his own sanity and health, and also so the kids and I can get back to our daily routines!
